COM Express Evaluation Carrier Type 6

CompuLab, which debuted its first COM Express modules last month, has added a high-end Type 6 module using Intel’s Core i7/i5/i3 CPUs, clocked up to 3.2GHz.

Last month, Israel-based CompuLab unleashed its first series of COM Express modules, based on Intel’s Broadwell and BayTrail SoCs, and AMD’s Embedded G-Series and E-Series SoCs. This week, the company unveiled a higher-end COM Express Type 6 offering, the Core i7/i5/i3-based “COMEX-IC40D,” which is claimed to be “the most powerful COM Express module on the market.”

The COMEX-IC40D’s LGA-1150 socket can be stuffed with a choice of four 22nm Intel “Haswell” processors — the quad-core Core i7-4790S or Core i5-4590T, or the dual-core Core i3-4350T or Celeron G1820TE — all of which were introduced in the first half of 2014 and are on Intel’s long lifecycle embedded product roadmap.

The COMEX-IC400 conforms to PICMG’s COM Express Type 6 specs, and targets applications including networking, industrial automation, communications, and IoT applications. In particular, the module’s high performance CPU and Intel HD Graphics GPU make it suitable for high-end multimedia applications such as digital signage, point of sale, and surveillance, says CompuLab. The board offers triple-mode video, with the options being LVDS, eDP, HDMI, and DisplayPort (note: use of LVDS precludes use of the eDP port).
The COMEX-IC400 also supports an industrial operating temperature range of -40 to 85°C, enabling its deployment in outdoor installations. With processor TDPs of 35W and 65W, well designed heat dissipation solutions will need to accompany the modules for operation at the high end of that range, and to that end CompuLab offers both passive and active heat extraction options. On the software side, CompuLab says the modules work with both Linux and Windows, while not indicating specific distributions or versions.

SB-COMEX-T6 carrier board

CompuLab supports development around the COMEX-IC40D module by means of its ATX form factor SB-COMEX-T6 carrier board, which can also be used with its Broadwell-based, Type 6 Compact-sized COMEX-IC50L module that we wrote about last month.

The 305 x 244mm carrier board offers an extensive feature set, including ports for all the display ports as well as SATA, optional mSATA, and a microSD slot. Other interfaces implemented by the carrier include Realtek ALC886 audio with both analog and digital audio I/O connectors, six USB ports, including dual USB 3.0 connections, an ultra-mini RS232 port, an RJ45 CAN port, and more. For additional expansion, the SB-COMEX-T6 carrier offers a pair of mini-PCIe sockets, along with desktop-style PCIe x16, PCIe x4, and PCIe x1 expansion card slots.
